Trapped in a Dead Zone?

North Hawaii Community Hospital, a 35-bed rural acute care hospital located in Waimea, Hawaii Island, relied on cellular towers installed by local carriers in the area for their cell coverage within and around the confines of the hospital. With more than 300 employees and over a dozen employed physicians staff the main hospital, as well the outpatient clinics located in the Lucy Henriques Medical Center and at their Primary Care Clinic, cell coverage was proven unreliable at best with routine dropped calls for the major carriers.

To rectify the problem, North Hawaii Community Hospital requested HSi’s assistance. Conducting a thorough Cellular Site survey of the main hospital, emergency department, and two off-site locations, HSi was able to create an in-building solution design to increase signal strength to optimum levels at all desired locations.  Leveraging HSi Project Management and Cellular Engineering, coupled with local electrical resources, a cellular repeater system was implemented delivering to North Hawaii a robust, cost-effective solution improving cellular signal strength across the entire campus.

As a result of the 2-month project, from site survey to implementation, the organization has already received positive feedback from providers and staff on the vast improvements in cellular coverage.  In addition, the ease and reliability of cell coverage have improved the turnaround times for coordinating care for patients with the ability to quickly reach providers without having to wait for them to get into an area where “they can talk.”  As for the patients and visitors to the medical center, they don’t even know cell coverage used to be a problem – it is just there for them to use as they need, which is a consumer satisfier versus being a dissatisfier when it isn’t available.
